Victoria Bond
Artistic Director of Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival
Victoria Bond has an outstanding career as a conductor and composer. Born May 6, 1945 in Los Angeles, California she comes from a family of classical musicians. Her father was Philip Bond a bass vocalist and her mother Jane Bond a solo pianist. Bond’s education includes a bachelor’s in piano studies at Mannes School of Music with Nadia Reisenberg before later moving back to California to pursue her passion for composition. She received her master’s in composition at University of Southern California with Ingolf Dahl and William Vennard. She also studied conducting in the summer with Leonard Slatkin at Aspen Music Festival and School. Bond is the first woman to receive her doctorate in conducting from Julliard School of Music after originally being accepted for composition.
After her time at Juilliard she was appointed the Exxon/Arts Endowment Conductor with the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1978 by André Previn. In addition, she quickly became successful as a composer. Bond’s commission's include Houston Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Roanoke Symphony, Shanghai Symphony, Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra, and Audubon String Quartet. In 1998 she founded the Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival in New York and is the Artistic Director for the organization. Since 2005 Bond has served as the the principal guest conductor for the Chamber Opera of Chicago.
