Nancy Galbraith

Professor of Composition at Carnegie Mellon University

Nancy Galbraith was born on January 27, 1951 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Galbraith earned  a Bachelor’s of Music in Composition from Ohio University as well as a Masters from West Virginia University. Galbraith is currently Professor and Chair of Composition at Carnegie Mellon University.

Galbraith has a close relationship with the Pittsburgh Symphony, resulting in six premieres. In 1988 the Pittsburgh Symphony premiered her piece Morning Litany under the baton of Gennady Rozhdetsvensky. In 1998 the Pittsburgh Symphony commissioned Galbraith and premiered A Festive Violet Pulse to Celebrate Mariss Jansons, its new music director. In 2002 the Symphony premiered De Profundis ad Lucem, a piece commissioned by the California University of Pennsylvania to celebrate its 150th anniversary. In 2014 The Pittsburgh Symphony and conductor Donald Runnicles premiered Euphonic Blues.

Galbraith also has a relationship with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and was commissioned by Robert Page to write Missa Mysteriorum and Requiem. Galbraith has also been commissioned by the NAtional Endowment for the Arts, the Providence Singers, Pittsburgh Camerata, The Orquesta Sinfónica de Tucumán, and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.
