Nan Washburn
Music Director of the Michigan Philharmonic
Nan Washburn born in Denver but was raised in California. Her primary instrument being flute, Washburn earned her Bachelor's of Music from University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master's degree in performance from New England Conservatory of Music. After performing as a flutist for a number of years she decided to studying conducting in 1984. Washburn’s main conducting teachers include Denis de Coteau at CSU Hayward, Harold Farberman at the Conductors Institute, and at the Aspen Music Festival and School with Paul Vermel.
During her professional career she has conducted numerous high level orchestra’s throughout America in Richmond , Sacramento, Wyoming, Eugene, Berkeley, Marin, Cheyenne, Dubuque, Perrysburg, Stockton and Napa Valley. Washburn’s biggest claim to fame is her work as the co-founder, Artistic Director, and Associate Conductor of the Women’s Philharmonic from 1980-1190. These days the main orchestra she works with is the Michigan Philharmonic where she is beginning her 19th season with the orchestra.
