Anne Martindale Williams
Principal Cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
Anne Williams was born on July 5th, 1952. Williams attended the Curtis Institute of Music where she studied under Orlando Cole. Williams is the Principal Cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, a position she attained in 1979. Williams frequently solos with the Pittsburgh Symphony. She premiered The Giving Tree lead by composer Lorin Maazel. She also played Schuman’s Concerto in A Minor, Tippett’s Triple Concerto, PRevin’s Reflection, BAch’s BRandenburg Concertos No. 3 and 6, Strauss’ Don Quixote, Bloch’s Schelomo, Dvorak’s Cello Concerto, Dutilleux’s Tout un Monde Lointain, Saint-Saen’s Concerto No. 1, Brahm’s Double Concerto, and Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for String Quartet. She has also soloed with the Royal Philharmonic where she made her debut performing Dvorak’s Cello Concerto. Williams is also a teacher at Carnegie Mellon as well as an International Soloist. She frequently teaches masterclasses at Universities such as the Curtis Institute of Music, SUNY at Stony Brook, Manhattan School of Music, New World Symphony, the National Orchestral Institute, Credo, and the Masterworks Festival.
